Every winter here in Minnesota I think we are always surprised by how long and cold it is. I like to think that having these cold months really makes us appreciate the summer time when its 90 degrees and so humid you want to collapse. It does get hard, however, to be in a place that only has like 8 hours of daylight. Its dark at like 5:00 and so you have days where it’s dark when you drive to work and dark when you get home. You lose ambition to go outside 6:00 feels more like 8:00 and you just need sun and daylight or you might loose it! I feel like a vacation somewhere warm after Christmas is really necessary when you live in a place so far north. Aren’t we lucky that its possible to go on a sweet little escape. This year we went to Ft. Myers Florida. How pretty! I still haven’t seen any alligators while I’m in Florida so I am starting to believe they are a myth.
We stayed in a charming house on a river, still no alligators to be seen. We went exploring, saw manatees, ate peel and eat shrimp, tried oysters, and laid out at the beach. It was relaxing and delightful. We drank and ate to abundance and came home fat and happy. On one of our fun outings we discovered a blues bar with a beer drinking mule who lived in the backyard. We got to experience their blues fest with many local artists contributing to the performance. It was delightful! And how cool is it when you find a little home town place like that and you make friends with locals. You feels you’ve known each other longer than a week and miss them when you leave. What a great experience to bring us out of our everyday. We go on dates every night and dance and drink and just live. Something that we can forget to do in the weeks at home, in the cold weather with jobs reminding us our time isn’t always our own. It is important to take time to reconnect and step back from everyday life.
One thing I do like about vacation is no matter how fun and enjoyable the trip is I am always ready to be home again. To sleep in my own bed with my favorite pillow and visit my favorite bar in town. I miss my family and friends even though I’m only gone a short time. I think it’s because everything I see or do I want to tell them about or show them pictures of. I guess it really makes you appreciate all the things you have like my own car. I HATE having to rent a car what a pain, and I’m so paranoid driving a different vehicle. I don’t care if I get a fender bender in my own car, but trust me they will care.
