Unsure of what to make for dinner tonight? Look no further, this versatile dish is perfect as a side or as the main course. It is sure to satisfy and best part is that it is a healthy grilling option! I will be the first to admit that we are obsessed with Cauliflower Steaks. The best part is you can switch up the seasoning so that they match any mood you might be in.
One of our favorite things to do in Minnesota is take advantage of the warmer months and GRILL. We don’t want to get stuck in the same old rut of hot dogs on the grill so we are always looking to change it up a bit, and while we LOVE cauliflower and have had it featured on the blog before, we are excited to share this recipe with you all so that you can keep vegetables on the menu and find new delicious ways to enjoy your time outside!
We are happy to see cauliflower have its moment in the sun, but I will say it now, we loved it first! I loved cauliflower before cauliflower was the “cool” food that it is recently. I am pretty sure I was the only college student that bought heads of cauliflower and had raw cauliflower and veggie dip or cooked cauliflower with a little butter on it when I was feeling fancy as a frequent college dinner, lol. This was long before mashed cauliflower, riced cauliflower, cauliflower pizza crust, and certainly long before grilled cauliflower steaks! These are so tasty even a cauliflower lover like me was blown away with how great a flavor they have when grilled.
Enter: Grilled Cauliflower “Steaks” to the blog. This is so easy, there is barely a recipe needed but I am including it for those of us that just like a recipe as a starting point. Come on, you ‘recipe starting point’ people know who you are and I am proudly one of the gang. Basically all you need is a head or two of cauliflower and some oil and seasonings of your choice. I do highly recommend a grill pan as you see in the photo as it makes it even easier, but it is not a must have. Side note, I think I bought my grill pan at Walmart for about $2, no lie. Frankly, I think you could make these in a hot cast iron skillet as well as a grill, but who doesn’t like that smokey grill flavor, am I right?. These cauliflower steaks could be a meat substitute or used along side your favorite summer grilled meat of choice.
So here is the basic recipe and directions. Please drop us a comment if you enjoy them and what you did differently if anything.
Another great way to eat cauliflower.
- 1 head Cauliflower washed raw
- 4 tbsp olive or avocado oil
- 1 tbsp minced garlic
- salt, black pepper or seasonings of choice
-
Slice cauliflower into 1 inch thick slices aka steaks
-
in small bowl add minced garlic to oil. You can do this an hour ahead of time for extra flavor. Generously brush both sides and edges of steaks generously with seasoned olive oil.
-
Sprinkle both sides of steaks with salt and pepper. Other seasonings of choice include greek seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, ground ginger, cumin, cayenne pepper. I used salt, pepper and greek seasoning,.
-
Place on oiled grill pan or directly on grill. Cook on each side 8-10 minutes until charred with grill marks. Try to flip only once. Steaks should still be firm but not crunchy.
I found slicing the cauliflower into steaks the hardest part of this recipe. They did not always want to stay together. Remove the leaves from your head of cauliflower but don't cut off or out the core. One can also grill any extra pieces that may come off and loose of head when slicing. They are just not as "pretty" or "steak" like.
