A few tweaks takes Rice Crispy Bars to the next level. We have had enough with the store bought version, and to be honest we aren’t impressed with any homemade ones we have tried either. After careful calculation we have discovered the trick to bringing Rice Crispy Bars back to their former glory: More taste and softer bars. Move over chocolate chip cookies there is a new sheriff in town.
I don’t know what you all are think when you see Rice Krispy Treats in a vending machine or at a picnic, but when I see them, I think, “What Happened??!!” I don’t like, as in can’t eat, the prepackage Rice Crispy Treats that you can buy in stores and vending machines. A homemade beloved childhood treat has been reduced to prepackaged ‘blah’, in my opinion. The “new rice crispy treats” are nothing but overly sweet, with no flavor and don’t get me started on the few dried out hard homemade versions I have tasted at picnics.
BUT….Its time to go back to our childhood roots and restore Rice Crispy Treats to the level they deserve.
Just a few tweaks takes Rice Crispy Bars to the next/new level. It is all about the butter/marshmallow/cereal balance and let me tell you this recipe has the RIGHT balance. You will have a hard time not eating the entire pan and there will be none leftover to take home with you from the pot luck picnic!!
With just a few tweaks, you can take Rice Crispy Bars to a new level
- 24 ounces marshmallows
- 8 tablespoons butter
- 10 cups rice crispy cereal
-
Melt butter in large microwaveable bowl. Melt for 1 minute at a time until thoroughly melted.
-
Add marshmallows and stir until coated with butter. Microwave butter and marshmallows 1 minute at a time. Stir after each minute. Continue until marshmallows are totally melted.
-
Stir in ice crispies until well combined. Pat firmly into buttered 9x13 pan. Refrigerate until set. Cut and enjoy
I am not often an ingredient brand snob, but I am telling you the quality of marshmallows matters in Rice Crispy Treats!! Spend the extra few cents and by the top brand offered in your part of the world. That means, Kraft Jet Puffed in Minnesota.
Don’t panic when this recipe fills your 9×13 pan to the rim but you can cut them smaller and have more to share!! With such a big family I have a hard time not making recipes to feed the whole neighborhood.
Upside to this recipe being a larger serving is that it would be the perfect dessert to take to a summer picnic. It is a no fuss timeless favorite and everyone will be jealous that theirs never turns out as tasty, but not to fret we don’t mind if you share our secret.
