Swedish Meatballs

A slight variation on the traditional Swedish Meatball.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef 90% lean or higher
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated onions
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 tsp allspice
  • 32 ounces beef broth
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 8 ounces mushrooms optional

Instructions

  1. In mixing bowl add, ground beef, eggs, bread crumbs, milk, onions, salt, pepper and allspice. Mix until well combined

  2. Roll 1 1/2 inch meatballs.

  3. Place meatballs in large skillet over low heat.  Cook and turn to lightly brown on all sides.  Cover and cook for 15 minutes.  Remove cover continue cooking for an additional 10 minutes or until liquid is mostly evaporated.

  4. SKIP THIS DIRECTION IF NOT USING MUSHROOMS If using sliced mushrooms, add to pan now and cook until at least 1/2 of the liquid is evaporated. 

  5. Pour 16 ounces of beef broth over meatballs.  Cook on low for 15 minutes.

  6. In small bowl (or shaker bottle) whisk together remaining beef broth and flour.  Pour slowly into pan while stirring constantly to thicken into a gravy.  Cook an additional 5 minutes.  Serve over mashed potatoes or rice.

Recipe Notes

If you don't want to make your own gravy using beef broth you could substitute jarred gravy(use 2 jars) or powdered gravy mix(use 2 packets and follow directions on package) Follow the rest of the recipe as is.
